Fun, cute platformer from the maker of Miracle Fly.MagiCat does a great job balancing challenge with enjoyable gameplay.. Magicat is cutesy side-scrolling platformer inspired by retro games from the 16-bit era, developed by Kucing Rembes games and published by Toge Productions and Another Indie studios. I picked up Magicat because of its charming cutesy pixel art, and the fact that I like 2D platformers in general. The platforming feels very smooth and easy to handle, you have your basic jump, crawl, dash, and attack, which is like a magical kitty paw? or something like that. The levels are very basic at first but get increasingly more difficult as you progress, as they should in any half decent platformer. There's a whopping total of 63 levels spread across 7 worlds, each with its own boss at the end. This not only means you have a good variety of levels and gameplay, but also a tedious amount of reused assets and average enemies being reused as bosses. I didn't expect much from the boss design, but this is just lazy and tedious to play through. The enemy design are bare bone basics as well, most of them are just different iterations of the average slime enemy. Thankfully everything looks bright, colorful, and charming, so it kind of barely gets away with it (for a little while). There are collectibles that are mostly pointless and tedious to get, most of them hidden behind timed puzzles and after a few levels you just won't care about even trying to get them anymore. Like Super Meatboy, Magicat has a very basic story about something being taken and you having to retrieve it. In Magicat that's an artifact referred to as the worlds lost relic, I'm not sure why its so important but maybe it wards off evil slimes or something. There are small bits of dialog here and there, but its all just animals making animal noises and expressions, so there's no reason for it to be in the game at all and I'm not sure why it is. Unlike the enemy and boss designs, the level are pretty decently made. There are a number of basic puzzle platforming elements introduced throughout the different areas. Such as buttons that need to be pressed or held down to open doors, bouncy platforms, blocks that can be pushed around and used as platforms, controllable platforms, etc. Every area has a checkpoint including right before each boss, taking away any tension of possibly dying and having to restart. Even if you don't use checkpoints, the cost for reviving is very little. After awhile the entirety of the game became tedious and boring, leaving me unsatisfied and unwilling to finish it. Magicat has some initial charm with its bright and colorful 16-bit graphics and cheerful tunes, but the bland uninspired designs and eventual tedious platforming and puzzles cause it to be just another mediocre platformer in a sea of terribly mediocre platformers.. Factory Levels are designed by Satan himself.. + Cute style+ Simple controls+ Collectables- Recycled enemy\/bosses- Short unless you go for 100%- Too easyThe game has a nice style to it, simple yet effective and pleasing to look at. The controls are simple which is nice when you buy upgrades to your dash later on. You can buy upgrades with gems you have to get in each level and some of these are tricky without upgrades. The dev's have stated each gem can be gotten without using the dash but some are really frustrating to do without it. Points are meaningless unless you want more catpaws but the game is so easy you really shouldn't need to grind nor need to go for the top score to get many. I am already at world 6 with 900 catpaws and have used them on the world-map for some hidden items. There are 7 worlds so plenty of levels to play and each one sports their own boss, the final level of each actual world being original and not an enemy you see in the level. As much a I like the game though even the original bosses have similar patterns to defeat them which can be a let down but understandable with the simple style the game has. However I feel this game could of done better without a boss at the end of the normal levels. They are just bigger versions of the enemy you fight along the way in the same level. Some bosses later on have different attacks maybe but not different enough to justify this many bosses. They are just recolours over a pattern you already faced before. I feel they are there just to drag out the game for 20 seconds longer per level which is not good IMO. Time attack proves how short the levels are, each time attack gives you 100 seconds to get to the end and even if you screw up a few times you often have 20 seconds to spare. If you don't care for the gems the game will be short eve with over 60 levels.Overall it is nice but again the bosses at the end of each level just make the game less fun to play in the long-run at least for me. I give the game the thumbs-up however, I not really seen any bugs and the gems are the only real challenge I see so there is something for everyone who loves platformers. Take out the reused bosses and the game is pretty solid.. Bought for the cuteness, stayed for the platforming. For the price, you really can't go wrong. You get a cute magical kitty, a whole lot of great platforming, an army of slimes, and overall pleasing pixel graphics. The controls are pretty good and the cat feels very responsive to control.Unless you hate cats, hate cute things, or hate platformers - then this game would not be the game you're looking for.. I like cats. It may look like just another cutesy retro platformer designed to provide a brief dopamine hit of nostalgia, but MagiCat is surprisingly deep. Getting the three gems on each level requires equal doses of platforming precision and strategic thought, and the latter can often be fairly tough (moreso than I was expecting). I'm 7 hours in, only about halfway through, and the game is still humming along - my initial reaction to seeing the screenshots was that this game would provide about 5 hours of entertainment max before it either ended or became too boring to continue.I'm often pleasantly surprised by the way MagiCat consistently introduces new mechanics and concepts, rather than drive the existing ones into the ground. Hats off to the dev for keeping things fresh while still providing a healthy dose of familiar and comfortable tropes from classic games like Super Mario World. Great bang for your buck here..
